Design Therapy Logo.png

It’s no design agency that serves only fabulous research, concepts, & strategy plus implementation of what the human-centered market needs

It’s also no typical systemical therapy practice working in the private, unseen, after hours just as mental health services tend to do

Since 2015, Pixel Story Studio is like that lego piece that won’t quite fit. Because …

#1 Good Design & Mental Health

Too many products and services - and hence experiences have been designed without “good design” principles and with little regard to the wellbeing of the human being and their landscape.

Design: Pixel Story Studio heeds to the principles of good design, and applies various design methods - expanded from design thinking to a whole battery of “post it and sharpie magic”.

Psychology: This “Data & Narrative Play Space” (alternative interpretation of logo) also has been built on and around psychology, systemic intervention and prevention for sustainable wellbeing - not just riddance of symptoms & syndromes. (The founder’s CV lists spaces that informed this journey - psychology in academia, in companies, in profit and non-profit and total institutions).

See a list of projects on Good Design & Mental Health. Let’s co-design with people, communities and ecologies in their context desired experiences integrating old and new products & services.

#2 Community Building

The human drive to belong and all the mixed emotions around desired belongings yet also separations are astounding!

This sense to belong even connects to the basic and early life phenomenon of attachment development - the search, longing and individuation from the one’s primary caretakers. Later in life, these emotions turn into relationships characterized by love, care, and altruism - and all its expressions!

The shift of focus from the individual onto a couple, family or even a community is only logical. Communities are simply more resilient than individual alone. They accomplish greater good that one person alone and such impact is paramount for several challenges. While community-driven design is emerging and at the fore front for good reasons, it can be messier.

Community building by Pixel Story Studio encompasses various spheres such as new academic communities, multicultural neighborhoods and online community building too. A full list is of Community Building projects is here. And a more specific community of co-workers is #3 -

#3 Company Culture

Any company - any group of people gathered under a name for a purpose - develops a set of rules resulting in feels. Simply imagine the “culture” or complex observations one can report if they arrive at given workplace. Add also all those rules and rhythms that are out of sight.

Such company culture is a result of leadership and grass roots initiative - and rarely resulting from “good design for mental health”. It is thick with challenges hence opportunities to move from good to great.

Here is a sample list of projects around Company Culture. And hence onward to the overlapping topic of #4 DEI

#4 Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The topic of diversity of perspectives, representations and conversations to support of inclusion of all those involved and affected is not optional in designing good experiences in companies and communities.

The practice of pinpointing one’s privileges and stereotypes to actively work through them is neither a trend, either. It ought to be as basic as saying your name and educational accomplishments - as it collectively moves us to integration and less hurtful seperation.

This is Pixel Story Studio’s experience from having lived, learned and lounged in three countries, 10+ companies and 20+ chapters of belonging. As a primarily White female and heterosexually identifying systemic designer, Julika Lomas is determined to make this topic integrated in all projects rater than optional and for show. How else could one carry the privilege and fortune, and start talking about the non-privelege and misfortunes that also connect us as humans?

Lastly, a set of projects tackling Diversity, Equity & Inclusion - yet any project above includes DEI components. Just ask!
